Cherry angiomas are small benign growths formed by clusters of dilated capillaries. They appear as bright red bumps, usually one to five millimeters in size, on the trunk, arms, shoulders, and occasionally the face.
They're medically harmless but cosmetically bothersome to many clients. They tend to increase in number with age, particularly after the thirties.
Clients come in wanting them gone for cosmetic reasons. They've often had them for years and decided to address them before a vacation, photoshoot, or special occasion. Some clients have specific concerns about them being mistaken for skin cancer.
The exact cause of cherry angiomas isn't fully understood.
Age is the strongest correlate. They become more common from the thirties onward and increase in number over decades.
Genetics determine susceptibility. Some clients develop dozens; others develop none.
Hormonal factors may play a role, with pregnancy sometimes triggering or worsening them.
Cherry angiomas appear as bright red, dome-shaped bumps, usually painless and stable in size. They're most common on the trunk, particularly the chest and back, but can appear anywhere on the body.
The color is distinctive. Bright cherry red. They don't blanch fully with pressure (unlike some other skin lesions).
Cherry angiomas typically appear gradually starting in the thirties. By the sixties, most clients have several or many. The growths themselves are stable once formed (they don't typically grow or change).
Treatment is durable. Removed angiomas don't return. New ones can develop with age.
The industry treats cherry angiomas with several modalities.
Vascular laser (Nd:YAG like ClearV, pulsed dye laser, BBL) targets the dilated capillaries directly.
Electrosurgery can remove them with controlled cautery.
Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen freezes them off.
Each modality has different downtime and result profiles. Laser typically has the cleanest cosmetic result.
We use ClearV (Nd:YAG) for cherry angiomas. The laser targets hemoglobin in the angioma, heating it and causing the cluster of vessels to close off.
The treated angioma scabs over briefly (one to seven days), then flakes away, leaving smooth skin underneath. Larger angiomas may need a second treatment to fully clear.
The treatment is quick. Most clients have all visible angiomas treated in a single session of fifteen to thirty minutes.
