A gummy smile is when smiling exposes more of the upper gums than feels proportionate. Some clients have a moderate amount of gum show that bothers them. Others have significant gum exposure.
The cause is usually hyperactivity of the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle, which lifts the upper lip when smiling. Treatment relaxes this muscle to reduce the lift.
Most clients come in having considered their gummy smile for years. They've modified their smiles in photos. They've sometimes consulted with dentists about more invasive options. Once they learn about a low-risk, low-cost neuromodulator approach, many move forward quickly.
Several factors contribute to a gummy smile.
Levator muscle hyperactivity is the most common cause. The muscle that lifts the upper lip pulls it higher than the average smile.
Dental and gum position can also contribute. Some clients have shorter teeth or higher gum lines that create the appearance.
Upper lip length affects how much gum shows. Clients with shorter upper lips often have more visible gum when smiling.
Most clients have known about their gummy smile since adolescence. They've often modified how they smile in photos to reduce the appearance.
Clients describe being self-conscious about smiling fully in photos or in conversation. Some have considered orthodontics or gum surgery before learning about neuromodulator treatment.
Gummy smile is largely fixed from adolescence. The condition rarely changes significantly with age unless dental or gum changes occur.
Some clients become more aware of their smile in selfie-heavy contexts. Increased self-photography has made the concern more visible to many.
The industry standard is one to two units of Botox per side placed in the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi. Precision matters. Too much affects upper lip mechanics. Too little doesn't change the smile.
Gummy smile treatment is small and precise. We use one to two units of Botox per side, placed in the levator complex with technique that respects surrounding muscles.
The first treatment is often slightly conservative to assess response. Some clients need additional units at the two-week check. Others find the first dose perfect.
Results show in five to seven days. Most clients maintain every three to four months. The treatment can be combined with other upper-face work in the same visit.
