Port wine stains are a long conversation. The right treatment requires patience and honest expectations about what's possible.
Port wine stains are congenital vascular malformations present from birth. They appear as flat pink, red, or purple patches of skin, most commonly on the face or neck, formed by dilated capillaries in the dermis.
Without treatment, they typically darken and thicken over decades. With treatment, they can be significantly lightened, though complete clearance is rare.
Clients come in wanting to lighten the appearance significantly. Many have lived with the birthmark their whole lives and want to feel less self-conscious. Some are pursuing treatment as adults that wasn't available or accessible to them as children.
Port wine stains are caused by a genetic mutation that occurs during fetal development. They're not inherited, not preventable, and not caused by anything the parents did.
The mutation affects the development of capillaries in a specific area of skin, leading to permanently dilated vessels.
Port wine stains are present at birth and don't fade with age (unlike some other birthmarks). They typically appear as flat patches at first, then thicken and darken over decades without treatment.
The face and neck are the most common locations, with one side typically affected more than the other.
Without treatment, port wine stains typically darken from pink to red to purple over decades, and the skin may thicken and develop a cobblestone texture in adulthood.
Early treatment, ideally in childhood, often produces better results because the vessels are still developing. Adult treatment is also effective but typically requires more sessions for similar results.
The gold standard for port wine stains is pulsed dye laser (PDL), like the Candela V-Beam. PDL specifically targets hemoglobin and is the most studied and effective laser for this condition.
Other vascular lasers (Nd:YAG, BBL) can help but generally aren't first-line. Treatment is typically administered by dermatologists or specialized vascular laser centers.
We're honest. Port wine stains require specialized vascular laser treatment, and pulsed dye laser is the gold standard. We don't have PDL on platform.
For clients who want to start with the tools we have, BBL with vascular filter and ClearV can produce lightening over many sessions. For optimal results, we may refer to a dermatology practice with PDL capability.
If we treat, we set honest expectations. Lightening is gradual across many sessions. Complete elimination is unusual. Long-term maintenance is typical.
