Unwanted Facial Hair

Unwanted Facial Hair, Cleared

Facial hair is more complex than body hair. Hormonal patterns matter, skin tone matters, and the treatment plan adjusts to both.

What it is

Unwanted facial hair varies by type. Vellus hair (peach fuzz) is fine and light. Terminal hair is darker, thicker, and more visible. Both can be cleared with laser hair removal, though terminal hair responds more readily.

The pattern matters. Some clients have isolated areas (upper lip, chin). Others have more diffuse hair across the lower face from hormonal patterns like PCOS or hirsutism. The treatment plan adjusts to the pattern and the underlying cause.

Why Patients Seek Treatment

Clients come in tired of daily plucking, waxing, threading, or shaving. They want a longer-term solution. Laser hair removal calibrated to their skin tone produces meaningful and durable reduction.

What Causes It

Several factors drive facial hair growth.

Genetics determine baseline hair pattern. Some ethnic backgrounds have more terminal facial hair than others.

Hormonal patterns particularly elevated androgens, drive terminal hair growth on the face in clients with PCOS, hirsutism, or other endocrine conditions.

Age often shifts facial hair patterns, with new terminal hair appearing on the chin and upper lip in perimenopause and menopause.

Medications including some hormonal medications can affect facial hair growth.

02

Common Signs

Common patterns include upper lip hair, chin hair (single hairs or clusters), jawline hair, and sideburn density. Some clients have isolated dark hairs. Others have more diffuse fine hair.

Hormonally driven facial hair often follows specific patterns: a beard distribution on the chin, jawline, and neck that mirrors male androgenetic patterns.

03

Why It Changes Over Time

Facial hair patterns often shift with age and hormonal changes. New terminal hairs can appear in perimenopause and menopause. PCOS-driven hair can worsen with weight changes or hormonal shifts.

With consistent laser treatment, most facial hair can be significantly reduced. Hormonally driven hair often needs more sessions and ongoing maintenance.

04

How It's Commonly Addressed

Several modalities address facial hair.

Laser hair removal (Nd:YAG, alexandrite, diode, or combinations like GentleMax Pro Plus) targets the melanin in hair follicles. The right wavelength depends on skin tone.

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal. It works on any hair color but is slower than laser.

Vaniqa (eflornithine) topical prescription slows facial hair growth over weeks.

Hormonal management for clients with PCOS or hirsutism may include spironolactone, birth control pills, or other prescriptions through coordinating providers.

How we approach unwanted facial hair

Our primary tool is GentleMax Pro Plus, a Candela platform combining alexandrite (for lighter skin tones) and Nd:YAG (safe for all skin tones, including darker skin). The combination allows us to treat across the full Fitzpatrick scale safely.

For most clients, we plan six to eight initial sessions spaced four to six weeks apart for the face. Facial hair typically requires more sessions than body hair due to hormonal influence and hair cycle patterns.

For clients with hormonal patterns (PCOS, hirsutism), we coordinate with primary care or endocrinology. Addressing the hormonal driver alongside laser improves long-term results significantly.

We're rigorous about skin tone matching. Using the wrong wavelength on darker skin tones can cause pigment damage. We default to Nd:YAG for any client with Fitzpatrick 4-6 skin.

I was truly blown away after my appointment here. Every single person I interacted with, from the front desk to the providers who handled my treatments, was incredible! They made me feel so welcomed and cared for, and were both informative and genuinely kind. The space itself is spotless, cozy, and easily the most inviting place I’ve ever been for Botox. Michelle did my Botox and she was amazing! I also had a hydrafacial and dermaplaning, and I already can’t wait to come back again and again. You will not regret booking here!
